Hey Everyone,
I’ve been reading all your posts and you are all doing fantastic work. I figured before I go to bed tonight I better post back or who knows when I will find the time to do it next!
With the reading list, are those resources for mentors to read? Mentor supervisors? Or is it a list for reference. I think all would work great. I think it is fantastic that you found all those resources!
I liked that you looked at case studies Jamie. I think that would be beneficial for Northwest to look at too, so we can make changes to our programs.
I have no idea if you have already had training but I think the schedule for that looks great! An idea for possible inclusion would be a mock mentor/mentee session. Sometimes in our Supplemental Instructor training they hold a mock SI session so that new SIs can see a format of how it could work.
For branding it would be really cool to have something with a lightning bolt with the AMP logo. Or not…I’m kind of cheesy like that. I like all the other stuff. The balance between formal and informal is hard. I would be tempted to come up with a style sheet for the mentoring website, so there is consistent language throughout.
Evaluations are a tough thing to pin down. I think it would be good to use numbers to rate so that you could quantitatively analyze it. On the first question, you could break that down with specific components of the university lifestyle so you could evaluate different parts that mentoring is helping with or not helping with without being so broad. With the “What has your mentee/mentor been doing especially well?” Perhaps break that down into individual questions about each of the principles of mentoring so that the mentees can rate their mentor on each of those categories. This could help you in the future decide who was the best mentor, analyze weak areas in training, etc.
I like the advertisement for the students. It seem pretty informal but in a good way!
I'll send the SI evaluation sheets to Luke in an email that we used to use to evaluate our supplemental instructors when we are in a class that has an SI.
We would typically rate A’s as 4, B’s as 3 etc. We also take the final grades and the total SI sessions they attend and analyze the grades of the students compared to how many sessions they attend. Right now we say that students receive a letter grade (10%) to a half a letter grade higher if they attend.
Well, I think that is all for now. Good luck and let me know if I can do anything!
Kirk
